Dude... take that guy off the sand! He looks way too small...

Use Newspaper, or paper towels.

Really. I know someone who lost an expensive Albino due to sand impaction. The doc said he was too little. I helped her and soaked him and tryed getting it out but it was a great loss. Axe knows his stuff.

I've read a few places that sand isn't bad for them because they only eat it if they get hungry and there's nothing around to eat. I always have a cricket in the cage with him (never more than one, though) and I replace eaten/dead ones immediatly so he should never have the urge to eat it. Also he poohs on a regular basis and I've never found any sand in it. I am concerned though because he's starting to turn a dull brown (which is supposedly a sign of stress) and I can't figure out why. He's got plenty of hides, a hot side and a cool side of his cage, fresh water every day and an endless supply of crickets. Plus I handle him as little as possible (never allowing company to hold him) to help him adjust to his new home before I start trying to get him used to me. Besides a new substrate (which I am looking into, but I really have heard many sides of the argument for and against), is there anything I should be doing that I haven't mentioned?

Thanks,

Yes, I've also heard that. When they are little they tend to eat a lot. Accidently they may ingest it. Adults can digest the sand, Youngens are too little too handle it. But pitures can be desiving, maybe he can handle it. Good luck. By the way he looks awesome.

Thanks. I'll keep posted what I do with his sub. I do have a different kind that is high mantainance (some compressed coconut fiber). I was thinking of putting it on the warmer side but leaving the sand on the cooler side of his cage.

That sounds o.k. I am certainly no expert, maybe some day... Good luck.

p.s. I used compressed coconut fiber with my live terrarium amphbians tanks. It's alright. From my experience if it gets too wet, it gets choc full of little white bugs.
