Keywords: giant millipede pede
Picked this animal up as a bonus with a collection of reptiles that I bought. Not usually much interested in inverts, I was going to sell it. Unfortunately, I picked it up a couple of times and have become attached to it. Anybody got info on sexing and breeding these guys?
I know this is probably too late..but your pede looks like a Male judging from the "missing" legs 3 segments back.

Thanks. That's interesting. So, females would have legs on this segment? Do you have any info on breeding? Or lifespan?
Thanks again,
Derek

http://cviewmedia.com/articles/im01_millipedes.html That is a good site for millipede care ect. Yours looks like a Giant African Black..but I cant tell for sure. If you get a female, they should take care of the rest!! just dont throw out the dirt the babies take about 4 months to appear or more! Good Luck and get more types of Millies...theyre GREAT!

Say Derek, count 7 segments (or "rings") back and you'll see there's no legs there. You'll see 2 thumb like structures. Those are called gonads. When the male is ready to mate, he rears himself up high and extends the internal gonads out as far as he can covering them with semen. I've actually seen this from the males i've had in the past 20+ years. If there's 2 pairs of normal legs on the 7th segment, it's a female.. On the male, the head is wider and there's an obvious 7th ring that stands out in the crowd. One can see this if one has several dozen females and quite a few males. Like male hissing roaches who have two "bumps", well, the ring is more thicker.. i hope this helps..
