Butchered! Isn't that a little harsh... Venomoids aren't what I would sya butchered..(not trying to start a flame) but venomoid surgery isn't bad to the snake.
About the eating part,
prior to surgery I would make sure the animal is eating F/T perfectly. I really can't help you out there...

Hmm...would you consider a human being butchered if he/she got an appendix surgery?

I guess you don't know that the cobras that are venomoided (professional surgery) live a longer and a healthier life than the hots...

well..heck..you don't care do you? just have be conservative about everything around you.

By the way the snake ate after the surgury but stopped eating and its been two weeks. (he shedded 4 days ago)

Any ideas?

That is a beautiful snake. -- I don't consider a venomoid any more butchered than a spayed/neutered dog.

lol you all have to remember that dogs are far more domesticated than snakes. Also, when a do or cat is neutered it is 1) proventing a lot of un needed homelessness and disease in animals and 2) making the dog/cat's life better by removing a source of oftentimes would-be cancer, as well as aggression and other hormonal problems.

When you remove a snake's natural defence system you basically ruin the snake. The stress alone is very unneeded. And the implants that you add to make the animal 'look normal' again is another sorce of concern. Venemoids are butchered snakes created for people who want to 'look cool' by having a seemengly dangerous snake. Thats not ok in my eyes. If you want a snake, you take the snake for what it is. The whole snake. If you are afraid of the venom, you either handle the snake properly, dont handle the snake, or leave the snake to people who know what they are doing (or in the wild for that matter).

I just dont see venemoids as necessary. It is something that shouldnt be done to the animal. It holds no benefit to the snake at all, only to the keeper. That, to me, is selfish.

Yas,
Try scenting it in chicken broth. My friend had an albino monocle that wouldn't eat, but the chicken thing worked great. I am not aganist venomoids.

As much as I respect you and your opinions, I'd have to dissagree on this. I met up with a few surgents at herp shows who had healthy venomoids. They told me that there isn't any stress on the snake as it is sleeping during surgery. The snake doesn't know the difference. I have seen venomoid spitters who thought they were actually spitting! LOL
And they are not just for people who want to look cool. Off my head I can think if of a few reasons why moids would be good. They can make great training, they are good for people who have kids or are allergic to the antivenom its self so they don't have to take the risk. And my cat got his balls taken, and he is pissed! During breeding season, he sees female cats in the backyard and goes crazy! He litterally positioned his self on the females and tried to! I geuss he just isn't givening up... I'd rather have my balls over venom, so don't say spayings ok...

I am not really for or against the venomoid thing, but the reasons you give for it are lame. If someone is not willing to take the risks of having a hot animal then just leave them alone all together. I love snakes, and I would love to have a hot snake, but I cant take the risk of keeping one. I have kids, and I dont want to find out if Im alergic to anitvenom. To be perfectly honest, my only reason why would get one is so people would ooh and ahh when they saw it. Since I love the animal I will just leave it alone.

dook,
even if you would leave it alone, it could escape. No lie, my friend Mark had a taipan escape in his house! For people with children, maybe they don't want to take the risk.

I think there are a few exceptions for venomiods But somoeone that wants to keep it for there own pleasure I think they shouldnt have them. Those who teach others with the snakes are the only ones that should be allowed to have them.

BMX, if that was an issue, they shouldnt have the snake. ESPECIALLY if they have children! That is a good example of wanting a venemoid to look cool, not for teaching. If that person was using the moid for teaching, he should have been smart enought to not let the damn thing get out.

No offense riot, but all snakes have the potential to escape. The famous Faust(has his own cobra tecniques) has the most impressive handling tecniques and is one of the most, if not the most experienced person when it comes tp handling hots. Yet, on a few occasions, even once on tv, mambas have escaped. So does that mean he is not ready for hots??? Ofcourse not! He is like a hundred times more experienced then some people here combined! And my friend Mark is very experienced.
Anyways, there are people who have kids and do educational programs. Also some people want hots for their beauty so they get venomoids. They don't get them to look cool. Some do, but I know people who just get them for their beauty. The way I see it, if the snake is Healthy, has an ideal cage, and is happy, then there is nothing wrong with it. That is why I am not against them.....

Thanks for the advice man.. but it didn't work...
It had been almost a month since he last ate so I was getting really scared... I was right about to buy a pinky pump.. I even did put my credit card info into a website... I was about the purchase the damn thing but I decided to give the "good old force feeding" a chance. I put the head of a fuzzy in the guys mouth and ,as I expected, he refused... but after a couple tries he bit the head. I didn't wanna stress the animal more cos the fuzzy seemed too big for him so I left him in his cage with the mouse in his mouth. And then incredibly he started swallowing a ate the whole thing!:)
I am glad I didn't buy that pinky pump thingy. I am gonna post a pic of him eating...

Thanks again

Riot-- face it. Humans domesticate animals. Venomoids are just another example of how we modify pets to fit our lifestyle. Venomoid surgery is no more wrong than catching a snake and keeping it in captivity to begin with. You say that it's wrong to take away the snake's natural defense system... If you're keeping a snake in captivity, it doesn't need its natural defense system. And as far as escapes go, if a snake raised in captivity escaped, it probably wouldn't survive with or without its defense system, it wouldn't know what to do in the wild. The biggest injustice to an animal is keeping it as a pet. Past that, anything that the owner does to help adapt it for domestication (ie venomoid surgery) is really quite insignificant.
