I've had the Betta in with the FB's for over a year now. Betta's are hardy little critters that can tolerate water with low oxygen levels, (they can gulp air from the surface if need be), temperature fluctuations, (but not radical changes!), and low water quality, (they can survive in muddy, water-filled animal footprints in the wild). This doesn't mean I purposely subject the Betta to extreme conditions but rather it's a species I suspected would do well with a couple of FBTs. Keep the water changes relativley frequent and freeze-dried blood worms are relished as food. They have also fed off of the cricket bodies that drown but try not to let that become a habit. I've never noticed any confrontations or competition between the frogs and the Betta. If you're thinking of trying a Betta, get one that's healthy and alert... I've seen some that are pretty lethargic even though I thought their colors were good. Also, it seems some toxic frog species lose their potency in captivity and captive-born frogs seem to have little or none at all. All of this is just my own experience... none of this should be a ringing endorsement for Betta/FBT combinations... it has just worked out for me so far. Good luck!

I really like your photo. I just recenly got two firebellies of my own and I love them. I named them Bonnie and Clyde. At first they were totally active and never stopped moveing then I discoverd that the bark makeing asound like the crow do. I was told they do it to let other toads know they are males. Anyways they started out the same size now one is much bigger than the other and they hardly ever move anymore unless I am feeding them then they do nothing. Do they stop moving as it hets colder or are they sick? How can you tell if your frogs sre sick?

Fire-bellies are a temperate species so room temperature should be acceptable. I suspect new frogs will be a little excitable in their new enclosures so perhaps they've just settled down. Mine pretty much hang-out partially submerged and don't get too worked-up until some crickets, moths, or flies are introduced into the enclosure... then they become the "Flying Wallendas"! A sick frog will drastically lose weight and move slowly, if at all, even when food is introduced. As long as they are eating, they should be fine (but avoid over-feeding!) Good Luck!

If space is limited, a 10 gallon should be OK. Fill it only about1/3 to 1/2 but no more. They really only need enough water to float on their bellies. Change the water often. Also, make sure they have dry land to climb out of the water.
