There's nothing wrong with quiet

A very disturbing photo. What Chinese do to fauna in the name of medicine is criminal. For example, they are largely responsible for the depredation of rhino in Africa. A highly superstitious people, Chinese think that anything shaped like a phallus, such as a rhino horn, can be used as an aphrodisiac. This photo is a scathing indictment of their culture. Who cares that they weren't roasted alive? They're freakin dead, ain't they? Rating: 3/5

Door gunner you need to be more open minded about others cultures. I don't like how they are roasting turtles either but its just their culture. Just like american culture is to eat a burger and drink beer. And in India they would be appaled at this. They think cows are sacred and drink their blood and urin. And the chinese were not the only one who contributed to the fall of the rhinos many other people thought they were good for you even some americans.

small family of 2 cats,2 red eared slider turtles, 3 fish, and 3 humans.

I'm just wondering,(really, not trying to start anything or be a smart ass)why did you post this picture in a site dedicated to animal loving people? It is rather disturbing.

reptiles and amphibians are my life and since I was 3 I've been trying to learn everything I can about herpetology

Just turtles? How would you feel if some one used your finger nails to try and help their arthritis. Or maybe your eyes to make a tea that brings them good luck!! What if the meat on your body was a delicasy?! How would you feel about that? What then?!

DCherpguy, i completely agree.
DoorGunner, i think that you are right, and there are alot more people besides the chinese who do such terrible things.

i believe animal cruelty in any form is wrong.

You can't blame another culture for their beliefs. How do you know it doesn't work? Would you kill a turtle in hope to cure a loved one? Many people become desperate for cures to diseases.

Also, I'm Chinese and I have never roasted a turtle or used any "phallic symbols". Stop using sterotypes, I don't appreciate it.

they're not being stereotypical, they're expressing their views on what they think of that rather hair-raising photograph of animals people keep as pets. it's really so sad...:(

im heartbroken at viewing that picture.

"What Chinese do to fauna in the name of medicine is criminal... A highly superstitious people, Chinese think that anything shaped like a phallus, such as a rhino horn, can be used as an aphrodisiac."

How is that not sterotypical? He is making a generalized, false statement about a race.

1) I am also chinese and find the sterotype idiotic.

2) The person that posted this was JJ a guy who knows a lot about turts. His name in chinese even means "Turtle" he took this I think while he was visting in Taiwan.

3)You think this is bad just look at what ppl in the US do to dogs and cats and what else. Millions put to sleep or abused. Also turtle eating in the US is still going strong down in the south.

hey boxiebreeder,
Im chinese too, and i TOTALLY agree with you. Also, you forgot to mention that people in the US ALSO do terrible things to rattlesnakes AND gators, such as eating them, chopping their heads off at rattlesnake round ups and also alot of other things.

Thanks,
Ben

There's nothing wrong with quiet

That Americans do this or that to rattlesnakes or whatever does not make it right that Chinese destroy incredible numbers of fauna in order to satisfy their ignorant and unscientific belief in herbal medicine and aphrodisiacs. It's not a stereotype; it's a fact. Yes, the turtle roast pic is extremely disturbing, but it's just the tip of the iceberg. It's a fact that Koreans and Chinese have been caught in this country poaching black bears just to get the gall bladders. The ivory trade and rhino horn trade center in Asia. Go to an herbalist in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, or almost anywhere in Asia, and you will be appalled.

Have you ever been to China? I have, and it's certainly not how you think it is. China is going through modernization. Have you ever been to Shanghi or Bejing? I have, and this was years ago. I didn't see these shops. Your comments are sterotypical DoorGunner. Like I said before, I'm Chinese and I don't hunt turtles for medicine. What you're talking about are all the movies people see about those little Chinatown shops with sorcery and the sort. Those don't even exsist- the most disgusting thing you'll see would be the condition of fish. How is this turtle roast different from eating beef or pork? Where ever humans go we destroy. Don't make it seem like only the Asians are. Be more specific and more careful in the terms you use against another race. How are Americans eating turtles different from Chinese people eating turtles?
