Keywords: Coati Coatimundi exotic

Stubbins (mr stubbins, stubby) is a male nuetered coatimundi about 25lbs. Friendly and active he is saying hi. Notice the declawed 'fingers' with opposing thumbs.

OMG! never seen one without nails. Looks kinda funny. I'm glad I decided to let my little girl keep hers :) All coatis are pretty though.

I like coatis but they get big. I have a kinkajou now so maybe I am just used to a smaller mammal.

I was at a pet show in Orlando, Florida this weekend. It was called F.I.R.E. Well anyways there were two vendors that had baby coatis still on the bottle. Let me tell you, I am a procyonidae guy naturally, and I absolutely fell in love with these little coatis. They were still on the bottle too. Cliff from AnimalsExotique.com had them. They are declawed too so it didnt hurt when they were climbing on my shoulder. And they are just the coolest animals out of the raccoon family even though I have a kinkajou. In my book coatis win. Maybe its because I got my kink as an adult and these were baby coatis but I still love them all.

Havent had a Kinkajou (yet :) but all our coati's are very curious and get along well with cats. Extreamly fun and loving and Bond well with people.
Had a sad time recently with a bottle baby - He had claws (no trouble) but learning to curb the nipp play... ahhh!
We will try again soonish and post baby pics then.

is it better to have them declawed?

Two claws or not two claws...
I think this could be a good debate question. I think if you have and raise a pet right it doesnt matter. If you get one from someone else, it just might.
Both of ours have been through several owners, are declawed (front) and that has saved us cage floors and walls.
I learned first hand how short tempered females get in spring 'heat', no claws so there was little blood in my lesson. Of course coatis nip quite a bit, play - warning - etc. with each other (and babies do nip!.
I noticed also that when the female warns the male off first she raises and bats with paw, then nips. But thats only because he wants to play so much he makes her react/play with him.

Metallicarox: Like I said earlier, you'll just have to see if they get along well. Get the coati fixed and declawed. You are going to thank yourself when you get it fixed and declawed because you'll have a lot less problems. Just get the baby coati fixed and declawed and you'll be fine. A breeder that I recommend is a friend of mine by the name of Cliff from AnimalsExotique.com

I am WORKING on getting mine declawed. BETTER SOONER THAN LATER!!! I found this out the HARD way. AMny destroyed walls, floors, and anything else that is not made of a strong metal basically. lol
Oh, and not to mention, less blood when dealing with a temper tantrum coati. :P
But get the claws done, front first, then back later. You dont want to have all four done at the same time. This is way too painful for them!
I'm still trying to figure out how to keep mine indoors. :( Till we move, they are kept indoors. And so far have managed to ruin any of my ideas for giving them water. Even in water bottles, they drain them and soak thier cages. They throw thier litter everywhere and ruin any litter boxes I put in. Cant leavea food dish in. They tip them and tear them up too.
Declawing is VERY helpful!
but I am lost as to how to eal with these other problems.
Anyone having any success on keeping thiers INDOORS? and if so would you email me at zooanimalsgirl@yahoo.com please. Thanks so much!

Hi Zoolady,
First I understand the tear up issue, our newest has claws, but I think his attitude is a male thing... need to get to males EARLY and then they dont destroy. At 12 weeks It took us more than 2 weeks to stop the couch shredding tendancy (blankets can do wonders). He never did fully litter box train, and same as the older neuter male (stubby) he goes where he wants - with a couple of favorites. Moving the box there worked some...As for the water - if its in a dish, it will look cool flowing... I tied a flat sided bucket by the handle up on a wall of the pen, full or nearly full stubby does not tip it over, he does dip and play with it but it stays in the bucket. Sometimes when I let them out I fill a kids pool - its a kick the way they play, Coati's LOVE water. Try a small floating ducky on yours! (tubs work too) and stand back - things will get wet :-)
