These are both normal, healthy Whites that are long term captives, but they very different in color. You can see that their coloring has nothing to do with camouflage strategy either. The brown one is brown during the day and pale green at night.

No they are fine as long as the fat store above the eye is not folded over covering up the eye. So these are both nice healthy frogs.

the brown litoria caerulea's supra tympanic ridge is folding to far over the tympanum, which is a sign of obesity. if you want to see a frog which is not overweight check my pics!

I know what you mean but its not unhealthy and I also have a whites treefrog that looks practically identical to yours. and I do think that it is a little overweight but is still fine as long as its eyes are not covered up like I said in my last post. DC

i know what you mean, but they are still overweight, and overweight frogs WILL live a shorter life.
i just read your profile, i have also been interested in herps ever since i was 3-4. did you have a local frog pond? where you would catch taddies each summer? i did, thats what sparked my pasion!!!

both of these frogs ARE obese. i have owned several tree frogs as well as had several in my care. i also have worked closely with reptile/amphibian zoo keepers at my local zoo. everyone i have shown these pictures to says that these frogs are not remotely healthy. the roll of fat and skin over the tympanic membrane should not cover more than half of the tympanic membrane. if it does (like in both of these specimens) the animal is overweight. also, why is the green one's right eye purple? it appears to be a fungal infection of some kind. fungal infections are common in animals that are so obese that they have trouble moving a lot.

The brown frog is too big, but the green frog is FINE. I don't know what you are talking about. Have you ever had a whites tree frog? Other tree frogs, like a green or red eye, are VERY different than a Whites. Whites are SUPPOSED to have tymponic ridges. I agree with you that the ridges should cover 1/2 of the tympanic membranes at the MOST, but the ridges on that green guy are barely covering ANYTHING. He looks FINE!

supra tympanic ridges are prominent in litoria caeruleas, but when the supra tympanic ridge folds to far over the tympanic membrane then this is a sign of obesity! the green WTF is not really overweight, but the brown one is defineately overweight. as i said an overweight frogs lifespan will be much shorter then a frog which is not overweight.

angelawina; have *you* ever had a white's tree frog? i have had several and there are currently 2 in my care - healthy ones, by the way. the ridge over the tympanic membrane SHOULD be visible but should not cover more than half of the membrane itself. i never said that the membrane should not be visible! from this angle, at least, i cannot see the tympanic membrane on the green frog. the brown one is obviously far more obese than the green one. the green one is overweight just not so badly that any extreme diet changes need to be made. the brown one, however, is not healthy in the slightest. and by the way, the green one's right eye still appears to be purple . . .

I can't help but agree that the brown one is overweight, but the green WTF is only slightly obese but the eye looks infected. Also on the brown specimen it seems to have some sort of injury or burns on its back.

You can't possibly think these frogs are healthy! The poor little guys. I look at these frogs compared to my 4 Whites and you can't tell me these are healthy frogs. I'm sorry if I'm coming across sounding rude, I don't mean to but I rescued one frog that was so under weight that you could almost see through him ... The poor guy lived 9 years with no vitamins at all. May I ask if you feed them Pinkie Mice??

Wow that brown whites is way overweight. I suggest you quit feeding your frog pinkie mice they are not healthy at all for them. And please get the green frog to the vet too his eye looks pretty bad.
