Photo taken during a 'behind the scenes' tour of the Reptile house at the Buffalo Zoo. She lives in 55 degree water in a specially cooled tank. Biggest Salamander I've ever seen!
For those of you who have received the latest Reptiles magazine, this is the same Salamander (and Zoo Keeper) featured in the full sized photo in the Salamander section of the magazine. If you do not have a subscription, but like Salamanders, it's a worthwile issue to pick up!

That is the biggest salamander I have ever seen, other than the hellbender..What is the species on it?? Do they always get that big???

That thing is not a hellbender. Hellbenders live in the US, this giant lives in Asia

Yup, Asia is correct. For any of you who collect Reptiles Magazine, dig out your October 2003 issue and turn to page 52. That is the same Keeper and the same Salamander. They have two of them, the other one is pictured on page 53. They are Japanese Giant Salamanders (Andrias japonica).

I can remember which species (either Japanese or Chinese Giants), but They get a lot bigger than even that one, something like 5 feet or so.
