Anybody know what causes this?

It looks like a corneal abrasion of some sort. You might want to take it to a vet just to make sure. When the snake sheds, does the eye cap come off with the rest of the skin?

hi, it first happend months ago, it appeared just before a shed, then it disappapperad when he shed, so i thought no more about it. This time it came just before a shed as before, but it stayed after the shed.
i'm going to get him checked out in any case.

Since you said that it comes and goes, it may be a fungal infection, Similiar to what people have when they have brittle crusted nails. Does the snake have this problem with both of its eyes?

Just this eye, the other is fine, he is housed with 2 other garters, they're both fine as well.

Well, I'm stumped. After you take it to the vet, let us know what it was, and how everything turns out.

i forgot all about this post...

anyhow, i went to the vet and was told it was just skin that hadn't shed. Two sheds later and it's now gone! he seems a bit happier now.
Strange how it took 3 sheds to clear that up.

usually when snakes shed, sometimes the eye scale doesnt come off, and over time it builds, and builds after every shed, until it really becomes noticable. Same happened to my bci, all sorted now though. Everytime one of my snakes shed, i check the shed to see it both eye scales have come off, and if all the tail shed has come off, as if this is allowed to build up can cut off the flow of blood, and the end of the tail can drop off, exposing bone

dude to avoid all that during the sheddin days spray them with warm water everyday twice a day to keep the skin moist to avoid all that bad shedding and u might want to add somemore stuff where the snake can start to rub on before sheeding

Cheers, as it happens, i do spray them & they also spend hours on end bathing comming up to a shed, and they definatley have various textures to rub.
Thats why i ruled out the idea of it being skin. It was the first time i'd seen it in the 7 years of keeping them, and it hasn't returned since so all is well.
Thanks for your input though.
