Young Black Rat Snake

Would you guys please identify this snake for me. I caught it this morning in my wifes houseplants, took a couple of photos and released it into a nice rockbreak. It flattenend out it neck and rattled its tail when disturbed but doesnt seem to be any type of hognose.

Thanks DC, looked around the net and found some pics on a VA herp site that showed the same pattern on the head and body so thanks for the confirmation. Around here I think he grows up into what we basically just call a black snake? I am in the eastern panhandle near Kearneysville, lots of snakes around here :)
