Has your caterpillar cacooned yet? I looked around but couldn't find what it was for sure. What part of the country do you live?

I found a caterpillar just like this in my yard. I didn't know what it was so I emailed someone and this is what they told me it is. "This caterpillar is one of the hawk moths that scientifically is one of the macroglossinae. It is related to the tomato hornworm." I still haven't figured out if the stinger looking protrusion on its back is for intimidation or really stings. I live close to Galveston, Texas and this was the first time I've seen this type of caterpillaer. This caterpillar died before it cocooned, we couldn't figure out what type of plant it ate.
