Nice pic... They are commonly known as a banana spider. They are found all over the southern us. Webs are big enough and strong enough to catch and hold small birds.

A Banana Spider, it truly is. They are very common here in Louisiana. THey love the swamps and are quite prolific there.
As one memeber stated their webs are very strong. I have seen their webs span over 15 feet in width and they love palmetto trees.
One time I was on a nature trail in the Jean Lafitte reserve and we were observing these spiders. I actually backed into the lower attachment point of one of there webs. I only felt it as I moved forward and it tugged my shirt and felt like fishing wire! Lucky me, mr Spider found his way on my shirt!
I was like a little girl frantically and spastically trying to get this beast off of my sleeve! Ahhhh!

hahah yeah they do pretty scary...I saw some in florida when I was visiting an aunt...they were huge!!!
