Keywords: white black spots spider zig zag

Here's a spider I found down low on a trail I travel on often in south east Louisiana. Its all white with black spots across its back and black stripes on its white legs. And on the center of its web there is a thicker zig zag pattern. I searched around the web and the only spiders I could find with a similar web were yellow and black. So anyone have anyideas what this could be?

This is a Black-and-yellow Argiope (Argiope Aurantia), a type of Orb Weaver. They come in a couple different color patterns, one that's black & yellow (hence the name), and a yellow & brown version, as in your picture. Like all Orb Weavers, they're completely harmless to humans. The pattern in thier web can vary from the straight vertical zigzag as in your photo, to a round 'patch' of zigzags that the Spider sits in the middle of. The purpose of these patterns is to hide the Spider from predators, and when disturbed, the Spider will shake the web violently, creating a blur of motion in which it's hard to pick the Argiope out in. Failing that, they'll abandon the web and fall to the ground to hide in the vegetation below.

Thanks for the ID! It's weird I have never seen these in my area before and right after I saw this one I went back out and saw two more not 5' from each other all about the same color. One had the round pattern like you were saying and another had the zig zag with added width in the center. It was interesting to watch this bigger one i found it was very active. It would bounce up and down on its web after a insect would fly by or get away. It also would switch from one side to the other very quickly, and I also seen it drop down really fast like you said.
