Keywords: Northern Pacific Rattlesnake venomoid feeding venomous altered

This photo is of an adult northern pacific rattlesnale female...she has undergone the venomoid procedure, and is used in my educational presentations. She feeds on frozen and thawed prey, and has some nice sized fangs! She is now almost four feet long, and ready to breed!

Educational or medical reasons for venomoiding a snake are fine by me. The problem is when people want the surgury done so that they can just free handle it like a corn snake!

Well she actually did tag me once. I will tell you this much, she is not that bad. Rattler fangs are like needles, small, sharp, and hallow. Basically the initial prick of pain was all I suffered from. I used alcohol to disinfect the wound, and from there it was nothing to worry about. Associated with all bites was also the minor itching for a little while after the bite. This may be caused by the enzymes in the saliva?

She tagged me when I was moving the bag she was contained in. I was taking her to use in a presentation, and the fine cloth bag wasn't a match for her fangs. No biggie!

Thanks for the ever so positive comment!

-Steve

Note, I am now editing this comment to add that the message this post was in reply to was removed by the kind moderators of KS! FYI, she tagged me when she came in from shipping. I thought she was double bagged, and while untying the knot she managed to hit through the snake bad - bam!
