Keywords: Spider red legs thorax head mandibles UK not seen

Spider found in garden at school where I work - never seen by me before in UK. It was about 1" long and moved quite slowly. There was at least one more in the corner. It was behind a pile of bricks I was moving, up against the wall of the school. By the time I had thought to go back and catch it, it was gone.

Best I can track down is probably Sysdera crocata. found in the northern hemisphere usually under stones. Typically eat woodlice (pillbugs, rolypolies, etc.)

Thank you PHWyvern and mikaso...
You have put my mind at rest on this one. I have not seen them since April or so, but Im sure they are still there somewhere! Thanks again, Dave.

you either see them or you dont. when they are localised and if you get one you get a cluster of them. each year a number of kids get bitten by them in liverpool. their smaller cousin dysdra erythrina helps out with some of the biting. its similar but has no dorsal spines on femur iv and different male palpal organs. and its smaller.harpactea rubicunda is similar in size to d.crocota but 8-10 spines on femur iv.

I'm pretty sure it's called a sow bug eating spider. I caught one here in New England.

Thanks for the ID, I just found one as I was using my bathroom at midnight.. The strangest thing is, I live in Eastern Washington state... Didn't know they roamed in these parts. Gave me and my girlfriend quite a fright.
