My son found this beetle in our garage about a week ago. We live in the mid-west USA. He caught it in his insect viewing container long enough so we could get pics. This guy really was big and quite impressive to watch fly away.
Does anyone know what kind of beetle this is?

this appears to be an eastern hercules beetle (rhinoceros beetle) this specimen is most likely a female.. its in the scarab family, the most familiar relatives being the green june bug, may beetle, etc..

I thought this might have been a "Goldsmith Beetle" after I have done some further research. Not sure if this could be Cotalpa lanigera Family: Scarabaeidae better known as the "Goldsmith Beetle" or the type beetle you suggest.
I found my info at: http://entweb.clemson.edu/museum/beetles/local/btle28.htm but I am really unsure of the correct size. Do U have any good references i can check out?

Hey gang, this attractive beetle is the Grapevine Beetle (Pelidnota punctata).
If you would like more info, just type in Pelidnota punctata on google.com.
Happy hunting.
